The European Association of Heavy Haulage, Transport and Mobile Cranes (ESTA) revealed the Awards of Excellence 2008. Some 400 guests from around Europe and the world were present at the annual meeting and dinner in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to witness the award ceremony.

Crane Jobs of the Year 

Category A: Up to 100t telescopic or equivalent lattice boom 

No.1 Mediaco Levage S.A., France 

Installation of a tower crane in the old and narrow city centre of Draguignan, France required studies, ingenious and efficient solutions using cranes, fork lifts and trailers. 

  

No.2 Wagenborg Nedlift B.V., Netherlands 

Installation of a 90 tonne press inside a facility in Nijverdal, the Netherlands required cranes, modular beam trailers and hydraulic lift towers because of a restricted entrance. 

  

No.3 Koninklijke Saan B.V., Netherlands 

Installation of 5 prefabricated electronic units at a restricted area between roads and a railroad required a well prepared and ingenious solution using cranes, a trailer and support equipment. 

 

Category B: 100t and larger telescopic or equivalent lattice boom 

No.1 B M S A/S, Denmark 

Installation of a 193 tonne pedestrian bridge in Copenhagen, Denmark required extensive engineering, preparation and ingenious lifting and support solutions using up to 4 cranes up to 500 tonnes in a single lift, lifting beams, modular trailers and hydraulic lift towers. 

  

No.2 Sarens Nederland B.V., Netherlands 

A 3-unit (500, 150 and 120 tonne) offshore PLET Tower in Dintelmonde, the Netherlands had to be assembled and taken apart after testing involving detailed engineering and preparations, up to 4-crane lifts up to 650 tonnes, spreader beams and SPMTs. 

  

No.3 Fagioli S.p.A., Italy 

Installation of the 4th bridge over the Canal Grande in Venice, Italy required detailed studies, engineering and preparations using a combination of a barge and tugs, SPMTs, cranes up to 800 tonnes and hydraulic lift towers. 

  

  

Transport Jobs of the Year  

Transport Jobs of the Year – Category A: Less than 120t GVW 

No.1 TLW Transports Leclerc, France  

Transporting two 20 tonne roof sections, 9.6m diameter, over public roads required two special tilting frames to be designed, built and installed on the lowloaders to minimise disruption of traffic, wire lifting and removal of street furniture. 

  

No.2 STDR – TEDL, France  

Transport of two new 3-file wide 12-axle line girder beam trailer modules from the manufacturer in Champs sur Yonne, France to the port of Antwerp in Belgium required 5 months preparation, road surveys, an effective stowage plan and the use of a 4-bed-5 plus neck modular trailer. 

  

No.3 Heeren Transport B.V., Netherlands  

The transport, on short notice, of a dismantled portal crane from Heerle, the Netherlands to Dublin, Ireland required 5 simultaneous oversized truck loads, matching with 2 ferry crossings, permits and pilot cars. 

  

Category B: 120t GVW and higher 

No.1 Mammoet, Germany 

Moving an 820 tonne and 750 year-old church, 12 km by road from Heuersdorf to Borna (Germany) required detailed (infra)structural studies, AutoCad animation, extensive road and structural preparations, temporary bridges, hydraulic jacking and SPMTs in a six day transport operation. 

  

No.2 Multilift Transportsysteme Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Germany Moving a 496 tonne gas turbine, a 294 tonne transformer and a 456 tonne gas generator 60 km by road from Kelheim to Vohburg-Irsching (Germany) required i.e. road surveys, a risk analysis and evaluation, permits, 27 structural analysis, 2 temporary bridges, bridge shoring and (self-propelled) modular trailers. 

  

No.3 Wagenborg Nedlift B.V., Netherlands  

Moving 4 transformers up to 330 tonnes from Linz, Austria to Diele substation, Germany required the design, engineering and use of the 25 m/400 tonne capacity free span Temporary Bridge Construction (TBC) in combination with hydraulic lift towers, SPMTs, modular trailers and jacking and skidding.

The self-supporting and remote controlled hydraulic Bundle Lifter lifting device 

ESTA Development Award 2008 

Terex Demag, Germany  

The 3,200t / 44,000 tonne-metre capacity pick-and carry CC 8800-1 Twin crawler crane. The Award was received by Thomas Schramm, director of international sales and service.
